Kenchen Bharwani, a New York-based fashion consultant at Empire Apparel LLC who sources for Marmaxx Group stores like Marshalls and T.J. Maxx, told Inc. that TJX is “being very selective about where it puts its next dollar.”
She added that these closures give her little reason to question the overall health of off-price retail. “The appeal here is very straightforward. Shoppers will continue to want or love having access to recognizable brands at prices they can justify, and excess inventory gives off-price retail store buyers the opportunity to deliver that value,” she said. “Individual stores still have to earn their keep, even when demand for the format holds up.”
